Days Gone thrusts players into a harsh wilderness two years after a global pandemic has decimated humanity. The Freakers, once human, now roam the forests and abandoned towns in massive, terrifying hordes. Players control Deacon St. John, a former biker and outlaw, who must scavenge for supplies, craft weapons, and navigate the treacherous landscape while searching for his lost wife.

Gameplay combines third-person shooting, stealth, and exploration with a deep crafting system. The open world is filled with dynamic events, bandit camps, and Freaker nests. A key feature is the horde system, where hundreds of Freakers can swarm the player, requiring strategic use of traps, explosives, and the environment to survive. The story-driven campaign also includes motorcycle customization and upgrades, which are essential for traversal and combat.
